The ACT Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions was established under the Director of Public Prosecutions Act 1990 to institute, conduct and supervise prosecutions and related proceedings.
The Office comprises:
The Director of Public Prosecutions (the Director), an independent statutory officer appointed by the ACT Executive
Staff employed under the Public Sector Management Act 1994 to assist the Director.
The ODPP's principal role is to provide an independent, professional and effective prosecution service to the ACT community.
The Office maintains a strong commitment to the ACT Public Service Code of Conduct.
This position is primarily advocacy focused and will require the successful applicant to routinely prepare for and attend court, including at short notice. In addition to carrying a substantive advocacy workload, successful candidates will act as the second in charge within a small team of prosecutors, undertaking mentoring, supervision and some management responsibilities.
The successful candidates will have carriage of matters with of varying complexities, and prepare and appear in more complex summary hearings, sentences and bail applications in the Magistrates Court. The successful applicants will also appear in bail applications, sentences, pre-trial applications and single-judge appellate work in the Supreme Court and will instruct in Supreme Court trials and superior appellate courts. There may also be opportunities to be briefed as junior counsel, and on occasion as lead counsel, in Supreme Court trials through a dedicated development program.
The position will suit a candidate with proven advocacy experience, a strong desire to appear in court and the ability to provide steady, supportive leadership within a small team. The successful applicant will be an effective and confident communicator, capable of working professionally with the court, complainants, witnesses, professional colleagues and the police. Strong attention to detail, sound legal analytical skills and excellent time management skills are essential.

Eligibility / Other Requirements:
Admitted to, or eligible to, practice as a legal practitioner in the ACT.
The successful candidate/s will be required to undergo a pre-employment National Police Check.
Notes: There are permanent and temporary with the possibility of permanency positions available. Selection may be based on application and referee reports only. This process may form a merit pool to be utilised in the filling of future vacancies.
