Description

Supporting group General Counsel + working closely with project team
Broad commercial role - would suit corporate, projects, construction lawyer
Salary commensurate with experience + bonus + part time available (3 / 4 days)
The company:
An exciting opportunity to join an Australian resources company developing a $1bn large-scale steelmaking coal project. This is not your average company, being privately owned and managed by an entrepreneurial leadership team with a strong ESG focus. The project will create between 500 to 700 jobs during construction, more than 1,000 jobs once at full production and contribute more than $10 billion over its life to the Queensland economy. In addition to its economic impact, the project will be world-leading in terms of its environmental credentials. The project is currently under construction, with production of steelmaking coal to commence Q4 2023.
About the role:
This newly created role reporting to the Sydney based General Counsel will see you work alongside and be the day-to-day legal contact for the project team (including the head of construction and GM of operations) in the Company's Brisbane office. Being a small legal team, the role will cover the full spectrum of legal support required for development and operation of this mega project. You will partner with, and embed yourself within, the project team, working with the team to achieve the Company's commercial objectives whilst ensuring the Company's legal rights and interests are protected. The Company's head count is lean and the project is large, providing significant scope for exposure to senior management and to make a meaningful contribution.
Skills/Experience:
To be considered for this role you will have:
5-10+ years' PAE and an unrestricted practicing certificate;
demonstrated experience in contracts which could be from corporate (M&A), energy and resources, projects or construction law;
ideally top tier training which will have exposed you to projects of this size and some in-house (secondment is sufficient) experience relevant to the above, albeit not essential;
excellent drafting and commercial negotiation skills;
an autonomous, efficient and proactive approach - must be prepared to "roll up your sleeves";
a commercial mindset allowing you to immerse yourself in the business and manage a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
Benefits:
Awaiting you is:
the opportunity to contribute to the delivery of a major project - getting in early enough to experience the satisfaction of watching the project come to life;
the opportunity to work with a small team which rewards proactivity and thinking outside the box - lawyers aren't mushrooms here, but respected contributors;
salary commensurate with experience;
genuine work life balance - part time an option - 3 or 4 days per week;
an effective, well respected and established legal function working with an experienced and well-liked GC.

    Law is a system of rules that are created and enforced through social or governmental institutions to regulate behavior. Law as a system helps regulate and ensure that a community show respect, and equality amongst themselves. State-enforced laws can be made by a collective legislature or by a single legislator, resulting in statutes, by the executive through decrees and regulations, or established by judges through precedent, normally in common law jurisdictions. Private individuals can create legally binding contracts, including arbitration agreements that may elect to accept alternative arbitration to the normal court process. The formation of laws themselves may be influenced by a constitution, written or tacit, and the rights encoded therein. The law shapes politics, economics, history and society in various ways and serves as a mediator of relations between people.

    Brisbane ( (listen)) is the capital of and the most populous city in the Australian state of Queensland, and the third most populous city in Australia. Brisbane's metropolitan area has a population of over 2.5 million, and the South East Queensland metropolitan region, centred on Brisbane, encompasses a population of more than 3.6 million. The Brisbane central business district stands on the historic European settlement and is situated inside a peninsula of the Brisbane River, about 15 kilometres (9 miles) from its mouth at Moreton Bay, a bay of the Coral Sea. The metropolitan area extends in all directions along the hilly floodplain of the Brisbane River Valley between Moreton Bay and the Taylor and D'Aguilar mountain ranges. It sprawls across several of Australia's most populous local government areas (LGAs)—most centrally the City of Brisbane, which is by far the most populous LGA in the nation. The demonym of Brisbane is "Brisbanite", whilst common nicknames include "Brissy", "River City" and "Brisvegas".One of the oldest cities in Australia, Brisbane was founded upon the ancient homelands of the Aboriginal Turrbal and Jagera nations. Named after the Brisbane River on which it is located—which in turn takes its name from Scotsman Sir Thomas Brisbane, the Governor of New South Wales at the time of the city's founding—the area was chosen as a place for secondary offenders from the Sydney Colony. The Moreton Bay penal settlement was founded in 1824 at Redcliffe, 28 kilometres (17 mi) north of the central business district, but was soon abandoned and moved to North Quay in 1825, opening to free settlement in 1842. Brisbane was chosen as the capital when Queensland was proclaimed a separate colony from New South Wales in 1859. During World War II, Brisbane played a central role in the Allied campaign and served as the South West Pacific headquarters for United States Army General Douglas MacArthur.A diverse city with 32.2% of its metropolitan population being foreign born, Brisbane is classified as a global city, and ranks highly in ratings of liveable cities. Brisbane is well known for its distinct Queenslander architecture which forms much of the city's built heritage. The city is noted for its cuisine brunches, outdoor dining, and rooftop bar scene. Brisbane was also the origin of the Anzac Day tradition through the works of Canon David John Garland. A transportation hub, Brisbane is served by a large suburban rail network, popular bus and ferry networks as well as Australia's third-busiest airport and seaport. Brisbane is a popular tourist destination. Major landmarks and attractions include South Bank Parklands the Queensland Cultural Centre (home to the Queensland Museum, the Queensland Art Gallery, the Gallery of Modern Art and other institutions), the Story Bridge, Fortitude Valley, the Riverwalk network, the D'Aguilar National Park, Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, Mount Coot-tha Reserve and Moreton Bay and islands.
