Your Role The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) role at Defence Force Recruiting Headquarters has senior clinical and management responsibilities. The CMO role provides the strategic oversight to ensure the implementation of medical policies and procedures and provide subject matter expert (SME) advice to the Director General Defence Force Recruiting (DG DFR) on all medical recruitment aspects including Parliamentary, Media and Royal Commission enquiries. The CMO role is critical in making decisions on clinical assessments of recruits to deem them either suitable or unsuitable for recruitment, based on their medical assessments, while also ensuring compliance with regulations and extant Defence medical practices. This also includes provision of strategic health advice to DFR including; DGDFR, Implementation Steering Committee (ISC) and Senior Executive Group. The CMO will be the Director General Defence Force Recruiting’s (DG DFR) principal subject matter expert and advisor on all medical-related matters concerning recruiting. The CMO will engage with Joint Health Command and represent Defence Force Recruiting (DFR) at the Defence Health Policy Steering Group. The CMO will be responsible for implementation of Defence health policy regarding recruitment standards across the Defence Force Recruiting Organisation and for the governance and assurance of medical assessment processes to key stakeholders in Defence (Minister, Group Heads, JHC) and external organisations on the medical aspects of ADF recruiting (strategic policy and operational application). The position will determine outcomes relating to medical policy and execution of medical policy for Defence Force medical screening; determining medical fitness of DFR candidates with complex medical conditions; and exercise professional delegations including Review of Decisions, medical fitness determinations, waiver assessments, complaints review and advice. All of these require fast-paced and agile thinking and efforts. The CMO’s role is key to implementing the growth of the ADF as per the National Defence Strategy and Integrated Investment Plan, which have recently been released. This position is also required to support the increased workload, and addressing the Royal Commission propositions and anticipated recommendations.
