About Us:
Spark Professional Services is a leading provider of high and low-voltage electrical engineering solutions in Australia. With over 15 years of expertise, we specialize in testing, commissioning, design, maintenance, protection, and high voltage switching for critical industries including data centers, mining, renewable energy, commercial/industrial sites, water/utilities, and transport infrastructure. We deliver safe, compliant, and efficient electrical systems, ensuring reliability and performance for our clients' projects.
Position Overview:
We are seeking a skilled Electrical Engineer specializing in testing and commissioning to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will lead the commissioning of HV/LV systems, perform rigorous testing, and ensure compliance with industry standards. You will collaborate with contractors, stakeholders, and internal teams to deliver high-quality outcomes on projects such as data center upgrades, industrial power systems, and renewable energy installations. This position requires hands-on technical expertise, strong problem-solving skills, and a commitment to safety.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Responsible for leading the planning, coordination, and execution of all pre-commissioning, commissioning, and energization activities, ensuring technical compliance, safety assurance, and alignment with project schedules, applicable standards, and client requirements.
2. Perform and supervise secondary injection testing of all protection system types, including generator protection, motor protection, transformer and cable differential protection, current and voltage protection schemes, and line impedance protection, verifying correct logic, settings, interlocking, and tripping performance.
3. Design, plan, and supervise termination, testing, and commissioning procedures for current and voltage transformers (CTs/VTs), HV/LV switchgear, transformers, and associated protection systems, ensuring engineering validation of performance and integrity.
4. Perform primary and secondary injection testing on Air Circuit Breakers (ACBs), relay protection verification, and functional performance assessments to confirm system settings, selectivity, and operational reliability.
5. Conduct insulation resistance (Megger), continuity, VLF, Hi-Pot, and Ductor tests on medium-voltage cables, busbars, and switchboards to assess insulation quality and detect faults.
6. Develop and implement preventive and corrective maintenance strategies for ACBs, Power Factor Correction (PFC) units, distribution panels, and other electrical equipment to enhance system reliability and safety.
7. Coordinate with main contractors, sub-contractors, and project teams to align testing and commissioning activities with milestones, including establishing delivery and installation schedules for switchgear, cables, and fittings.
8. Organize and manage resources, including procurement of electrical components and allocation of team tasks, for efficient commissioning and maintenance operations.
9. Analyse system performance data from commissioning tests, conduct fault simulations, and recommend modifications to optimize power generation, transmission systems, transformers, switchgear, and control systems.
10. Prepare technical reports, documentation, and risk assessments, ensuring all activities adhere to relevant safety regulations, Australian standards (e.g., AS/NZS 3000, AS 3008), industry codes, and statutory requirements.
11. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate electrical systems with mechanical and control elements during pre-commissioning and post-commissioning audits.
12. Utilize specialized software (e.g., ETAP, Auto CAD, Aconex) to simulate electrical circuits, validate designs, and manage project documentation.
13. Provide technical advice on operational risks, troubleshoot issues in power distribution networks, and support 24/7 emergency responses as needed.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
• Bachelor’s degree recognized by Engineers Australia as comparable to an Australian bachelor’s degree (AQF Level 7)
• Minimum 3-5 years of relevant experience in electrical testing and commissioning, preferably in HV/LV systems for data centers, industrial sites, mining, or renewable energy projects.
• Proven hands-on experience with testing equipment such as ODEN, CPC100, CT Analyzer, Megger, Multifunction Testing Devices, and Sverker.
• Demonstrated involvement in key projects involving commissioning of MDBs, MCCs, VFDs, SMDBs, DBs, MV/LV cables, and protection relays (e.g., Schneider, Siemens, ABB brands).
• Experience in Australian projects or international roles with transferable skills to Australian standards.
Required Skills and Certifications:
• Strong knowledge of Australian electrical standards (e.g., AS/NZS 3000 for wiring, AS 3008 for cables) and safety regulations.
• Proficiency in software tools including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Teams), Auto CAD for drafting, Aconex for CRM, and simulation software like ETAP or PSCAD.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and leadership skills, with the ability to resolve technical issues and motivate teams.
• Verbal and written communication skills for reporting, stakeholder consultation, and supervision.
• High Voltage Switching Authorization or equivalent certification (desirable).
• Current Australian driver's license and willingness to travel to project sites.
• Membership with Engineers Australia or eligibility for Chartered Engineer status (preferred).
What We Offer:
• Competitive salary and superannuation.
• Opportunities for professional development and career progression.
