The Opportunity

The Media and Communications team has an exciting full-time opportunity for an enthusiastic, experienced and suitably qualified Communications Advisor. Reporting to the Coordinator Media and Communications, this role ensures information about Council and its activities is shared and promoted across our local community, while supporting the overall objectives of the wider Communications and Engagement Team.

Key Responsibilities

1. Develop and manage communications plans for Council events and projects;
2. Liaise with project teams and departments to support the sharing of information on Council activities to the community;
3. Perform an editorial role, including researching and writing articles for Maribyrnong Messenger;
4. Prepare weekly media releases and actively pursue media and promotional opportunities across Council's programs and activities;
5. Attend photo opportunities and events as appropriate;
6. Actively monitor, post and respond to messages on Council's social media accounts;
7. Support content delivery for Council's website ensuring all information conforms to Council Website Guidelines, providing support to website authors and page owners;
8. Support content delivery on engagement projects.

About You

To be considered for this role, you will have the following:

1. Tertiary qualification in communications, public relations, marketing or journalism in addition to several years' experience working in the field of specialisation;
2. Ability to write content for a diverse range of collateral;
3. Ability to write speeches for key stakeholders including the Mayor, Councillors and Executive Management Team, based on accurate information and messaging appropriate for the context;
4. Experience in internal communications;
5. Experience dealing with the media and journalists, with the ability to respond to media queries, prepare media releases accurately and within the timeframes required;
6. Previous experience producing and proofreading publications (e.g. newsletters) and managing print processes;
7. Proficiency using Microsoft Word, Adobe Photoshop, content management systems for Websites, desktop publishing, image scanning and digital cameras;
8. Major projects and infrastructure experience beneficial.

Our ideal candidate will have experience partnering with internal clients, will be able to coordinate and advise on communication plans for projects, have highly developed written and oral communication skills and will be able to skilfully manage conflicting priorities.
